Affinity Habitat Studio teamed up with the Bagida'waad (bawg-id-a-wahd) Alliance and Green Communities Canada through the Living Cities Canada Fund to install a mini forest at the Bagida'waad property in Neyaashiinigmiing (Cape Croker). The planting consisted of 7-8 individuals of 40 species of trees and shrubs for a total of 300 plants.
The planting was successfully completed with the careful effort of 23 local volunteers including the Aki-Guardian youth and other community members. In the mini forest planting methodology, the plants are spaced very closely, mimicking a naturally regenerating forest. This way, they exclude weeds on the ground, reducing maintenance requirements, while at the same time stretching tall as they reach for light. The result is a dense, biodiverse forest in a relatively short period of time.
The plants were supplied by Hortico and Origin Native Plants.
The site was prepared a few weeks prior with the assistance of Arborvitae Landscapes, including placing compost and old rotting logs. The logs will help to promote fungal growth along with a mycorrhizae inoculant added at the time of planting. In this symbiotic relationship, the mycelium benefit by receiving sugar from the plants in exchange for water and nutrients from the soil.
