Mini Forest Projects
A mini forest is a dense planting of native trees and shrubs. The density of the planting mimics natural forest regeneration. Excluding light from the ground layer minimizes water loss and weed growth, while at the same time prompts trees to grow tall as they reach for light. The result is a mature looking forest in a relatively short time span.
Guelph Private Residence Mini Forest
This planting was completed in the spring of 2024 on private property in the City of Guelph. A small bicycle pathway runs through the planting to allow for recreational use for the kids.
Bagida'waad Alliance Mini Forest
This project, completed in the fall of 2024, was planted on thin soil. The site was prepared using imported soil, compost and woody debris to help simulate woodland ecology. The rotting wood will promote fungal growth as the planting matures over time.
Joseph Brant Hospital Mini Forest
The Mental Health Courtyard at Joseph Brant Hospital already had mature trees, so the understory was planted with a diverse mix of sub-canopy and ground layer species. The increased biodiversity enhances the experience for patients, which has been proven to help improve one's sense of well-being.
St. George's Anglican Church, Goergetown Mini Forest
The yard in front of the church was an open lawn, which was a perfect place for a mini forest. This site now has a little less lawn to mow and a lot more biodiversity.
